Switching from aluminum-based antiperspirants to natural deodorants is a unique experience for each person. As much as we would love for everyone to be able to pick up a bottle, run a few swipes and be on their merry way to a healthier body, for some people, it might take a bit more effort. Armpits are tricky like that!
Even though many encounter no issues, for those affected, the process called detox can bring temporary effects of increased sweating and stronger body odor. During this period, your body begins to purge itself of dead skin cells and other particles that have built up over the years. This can last as little as one week and generally not more than few months.
We find that some new users, at the first sign of a detox, return to aluminum-based antiperspirants. We wish that weren't the case. While we cannot guarantee that making the switch will go smoothly for everyone, we feel strongly that with a little bit of help, choosing a natural deodorant, which is designed to work in harmony with your body, is an approach whose benefits far outweigh any potential drawbacks. Please note, that an uncommon detox can reoccur, if a person's lifestyle has changed, such as diet, medication or hormonal changes.
Following a simple routine that includes proper cleansing, exfoliation and hydration can help speed up the detox process and get you on your way to enjoy the benefits of natural deodorants. Keep in mind that detox varies from person to person and it is not the same as an underarm irritation or rash. Visit Irritation and Rashes to learn more.
To help make the detox process easier, we have created a kit, Detox - Underarm Care System™ (CLEANSE + EXFOLIATE + BALANCE), which in combination with tips below can significantly improve the chances of a successful transition.
Ease the transition with a simple routine of cleansing, exfoliation and hydration and follow these simple detox tips during your switch to a natural deodorant:
Avoid harsh detergents and use natural soaps instead. The simpler the better.
Keep hydrated throughout the day.
Wear loose fitting clothes made of natural fibers (cotton and linen are best).
Promote alkaline body environment, by consuming deep green, leafy vegetables, fresh fruit, nuts and legumes.
If you shave your underarms, shave at night and apply deodorant in the morning to avoid aggravating the skin.
Remind yourself that a little sweat is good for you.
And remember, detox is not the same as irritation or rash.
