All three Rustic MAKA deodorant lines share the same core base formula. The main differences come from how each line is scented and the addition of activated charcoal in Fresh + Active.

Activated charcoal is added specifically to Fresh + Active as part of its extra-strength formula for active, demanding days and higher odor-control needs.
Which Ingredients Help Control Odor?
Rustic MAKA deodorants use more than one ingredient to help keep odor under control. Magnesium hydroxide and zinc ricinoleate are two important parts of that system, and each brings something different to the formula.
Magnesium Hydroxide
Magnesium hydroxide is a key part of the odor-control system in every Rustic MAKA deodorant. It helps create conditions that are less favorable for the bacteria associated with underarm odor.
It also gives us a way to formulate effective natural deodorant without relying on baking soda, which can be uncomfortable for some sensitive underarms.

Zinc Ricinoleate
Zinc ricinoleate helps manage odor in a different way. It is used in deodorant formulas for its ability to bind odor-causing compounds, helping keep unwanted smells under control.
That makes it a useful partner to magnesium hydroxide. Together, they give the formula more than one way to address odor throughout the day.
And because the goal is odor control rather than blocking perspiration, your body can still sweat normally while the deodorant does its job.
Natural deodorant works best as a complete formula, not as one hero ingredient doing everything by itself. Magnesium hydroxide and zinc ricinoleate handle different parts of odor control, while the rest of the formula supports moisture, application, texture, and comfort.

Odor control is only part of a deodorant formula. The rest of the base helps manage everyday moisture, create the right texture, and make the deodorant glide comfortably across your skin.
Tapioca Powder
Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca) Powder helps absorb everyday moisture while contributing to the soft, smooth feel of the deodorant on your skin.
Unlike an antiperspirant, it isn’t there to stop your body from sweating. Instead, this plant-based powder helps manage some of the moisture that naturally develops throughout the day.
The tapioca powder used in our deodorant base is Certified Organic.
Bamboo Stem Extract
Bambusa Arundinacea (Bamboo) Stem Extract works alongside tapioca powder as part of the formula’s approach to everyday moisture and skin feel.
It helps support the lightweight, comfortable finish we want from a deodorant designed to be worn every day, without relying on ingredients that block perspiration.
Together, bamboo stem extract and tapioca powder help balance moisture management with a formula that still feels comfortable on the underarm.
Coconut Oil
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil forms part of the base of every Rustic MAKA deodorant and helps create the smooth glide that makes the formula comfortable to apply.
It helps the deodorant move easily across the underarm rather than feeling overly dry or dragging against the skin.
The coconut oil used in our deodorant base is Certified Organic.
Caprylic/Capric/Myristic/Stearic Triglyceride
Caprylic/Capric/Myristic/Stearic Triglyceride helps refine the texture and spreadability of the deodorant, contributing to a smooth and even application.
Working alongside coconut oil, it helps balance the feel of the formula so the deodorant has enough slip to glide comfortably across the skin without feeling overly greasy.
It is one of those less familiar ingredient names doing an important behind-the-scenes job: helping the finished deodorant feel good when you actually use it.
Candelilla Wax
Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax helps give the deodorant its solid structure and consistency, allowing the formula to hold its shape in the container.
It works with the other ingredients in the base to create the balance between firmness and glide that makes a solid deodorant practical and comfortable to apply.
Stearic Acid
Stearic acid helps support the texture, firmness, and overall structure of the deodorant formula.
Alongside candelilla wax, it helps create a solid deodorant that maintains its consistency while still being comfortable to swipe across the underarm.
Vitamin E
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) contributes skin-conditioning benefits to the deodorant base and helps support the comfortable feel of the formula on the underarm.
While other ingredients are focused on odor, moisture, glide, or structure, Vitamin E plays a supporting role in a formula designed for comfortable everyday wear.
Why Are Rustic MAKA Deodorants Baking Soda-Free and Aluminum-Free?
What we leave out of a deodorant formula can be just as intentional as what goes into it. Rustic MAKA deodorants are made without baking soda or aluminum, but for two different reasons.
Why We Skip Baking Soda
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is commonly used in natural deodorants for odor control, but it can be uncomfortable for some underarms.
Instead, every Rustic MAKA deodorant uses magnesium hydroxide as part of its odor-control system. It gives us another way to address odor without relying on baking soda.

Aluminum salts are commonly used in antiperspirants to reduce perspiration. Rustic MAKA deodorants aren’t designed to stop you from sweating.
Instead, our formulas focus on controlling odor while ingredients such as tapioca powder and bamboo stem extract help manage the feel of everyday moisture.
That means you can still sweat—which is expected when using a deodorant rather than an antiperspirant—while the formula focuses on odor control and everyday freshness.
What Does Activated Charcoal Do in Deodorant?
Activated charcoal is an additional ingredient in our Fresh + Active deodorants, where it works alongside the core Rustic MAKA formula as part of an extra-strength approach to underarm freshness.
Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is a highly porous form of carbon valued in underarm care for its ability to help lift away excess oil, impurities, and everyday buildup.
In Fresh + Active deodorant, activated charcoal works as part of the complete formula alongside magnesium hydroxide, zinc ricinoleate, tapioca powder, and bamboo stem extract. It supports the extra-strength formula rather than acting as the only ingredient responsible for odor control.
